What began as a fun weekly activity soon evolved into a hobby that taught me patience and creativity. Seeing the joy on my family & friend’s faces when I shared my desserts with them made me realize that a dessert can brighten anyone’s day.  In my sophomore year, my passion combined with a growing awareness of food insecurity in my local community.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, I witnessed some classmates struggling to receive meals, and I felt compelled to do something about that. Motivated to utilize my passion to create a meaningful impact, I founded Baking A Change. With the help, guidance, and support of my club advisor and student-led officer team, I launched Baking A Change as a school club where members can bake desserts in the culinary classroom and donate to shelters in the Charlotte area.

As the club grew, I expanded Baking A Change beyond community service. Baking A Change now incorporates lessons about the science of baking and introduces members to global desserts. Today, Baking A Change has over 40 members at Weddington High School alone where they have donated many treats to shelters and sponsored our school’s teacher breakfasts. We have now expanded Baking A Change beyond my school to become a national organization welcoming new chapters.

My journey with Baking A Change has shown me that when passion meets purpose, a meaningful impact is possible. I hope Baking A Change continues to inspire high school students to make a difference with what they love.
